Big Dilemma

The big question that has been weighing on my mind since my last doctor’s appointment is whether or not to get the H1N1 vaccine. Before that appointment a couple weeks ago, getting the vaccine was not even a consideration. I did consider getting the regular flu vaccine, but I ended up deciding against that one as well. That was until we went to the doctor and he unloaded all of the scary statistics of how it can affect pregnant women and basically made us feel stupid for even thinking about not getting it.

Since the appointment, I have had some time to process everything and do some more research and I still don’t want to get the vaccine. I’ve talked to several people about it and I’ve gotten very mixed reviews. Of the people who think I should get, many are of the opionion that the risks of getting the vaccine far outweigh the risks of getting the virus. I have become much more conscious of what goes into my body now that I’m pregnant and I know this is just one of the many decisions I have to make that doesn’t just affect me. Welcome to motherhood, right?

I am anxious to hear what your opinion is…especially if you are pregnant. Any helpful advice is appreciated as well:)

hey kelly! I remember when I was pregnant I was hesitant to get the flu shot but got it because of the doctors scaring me into getting it. But I am in the same boat about not wanting to get the H1N1. It seems they produced it so quickly and there is such a shortage that who knows how haphazardly it is being thrown together too! I am all about using natural herbs and supplements and lots of vegetables and fruits to keep my two little girls healthy instead of giving them the shot. The only concern I have with when you are pregnant is, your immune system goes down quite a bit while growing your baby and it’s harder to breath because of lung space being taken up, so therefore if you were to get the flu, it would be a little harder on you then just an average person. If I were pregnant I would consider it, but as of now I think my girls are healthy and we are healthy and don’t need it. I do remember when I was pregnant with Maya that anytime Leiana got a cold I would get it everytime almost. Whereas now I never get her colds. I feel it was because being pregnant it’s harder for your body to fight off some of that stuff. It’s a tough touchy issue and I think we have to pray hard and long about it, and God will give us the wisdom that we need to make the right decision. Love you lots and hope we can get together soon!!! Love the pictures of your growing belly!:)

i am definitely not getting the vaccine and we are not having brady get it either. it is a scary risk, but my brother said he will not have his kids get it and does not think i should either (he’s a doctor, not sure if you knew that). and my friend is a development biologist, who is pregnant, and she went to a big forum in d.c. about this. they told her that the whole population that gets the vaccine are acting as guinea pigs for it. those are my thoughts :)

the thing is, bowen does the opposite of what is so routine in this country to begin with. in a very conservative town like cincinnati this is rare as my friend who wanted to go natural in columbus had trouble finding a doc who would go along with her natural birthplan – she ended up with an episotomy as well. anyways, bowen does NOT perform episotomies, does NOT try to sway women away from natural births, does NOT advocate circumcisions because they’re not deemed “medically necessary” buy the AMA. so my common sense reaction is to believe in his stance on this vaccine, which is said to be very similiar to the regular flushot. my bro is a d.o. (like an m.d. but d.o.’s believe in a more holistic healthcare philosophy) and recommends i get this shot too. this flu season is supposed to be a doozie. my coworker got the flu at the end of her pregnancy and she was in bad shape! good luck with your decision.

I’m not pregnant now, but I have been several times! lol
For many reasons, I would not get the vaccine. Your body is a finely tuned machine, created by your Heavenly Father, and God has made this machine to correct its shortcomings, and heal itself. There are and will be many risks you will take and choices to make over the next months, and you will make the right choices because you know who has all the answers! He will always give you the wisdom to know what to do, and the peace in your heart, knowing your every move and step is directed by the Master Physician.

Just remember, the things of this world are guided by greed (pharmaceutical companies, etc.), and they aren’t concerned with you or your little one!

The Wallaces love you–always have, and always will!

Please listen to the opinion of the doctors and their staff. I just watched a video several minutes before your post about a pregnant woman who was misdiagnosed twice, so she wasn’t treated with tamiflu, and now she is dead leaving her parents alone to raise the newborn (she was taken by c-section.) For some reason this flu is hitting pregnant women hard. Don’t listen to us, listen to your docs. Sorry for the sad story but it was truly wierd, the timing of your post! Take care.

Kelly,
Hey, its Maria. I have not shared this on facebook yet but I,too, am pregnant. I must be a couple weeks behind you because I am 11 weeks. I just finished nursing school and will graduate on Saturday so I have been in the hospital alot and have tried to read as much as I can on the H1N1. I am definetly not getting the vaccine, nor am I letting my daughter get it. I feel that it was a rushed thing and was not given enough time to be tested properly. Furthermore….the media is not informing us properly–the people that are dying of this flu (most the time) have some kind of other issue going on. They are already immunocompromised in some way….And in comparison to the “regular old flu” the death statistics are no greater. This is just my opinion but I just wanted to let you know…Hope you are doing well and I wish you a wonderful, blissful pregnancy!!
