Choosing a Pediatrician

Now that I’m in my last trimester and the “home stretch” I am realizing that we still have a lot to do to get ready for our little guy. Up until this point, we really haven’t had to do much…but now decisions have to be made…some sooner than others. In the last week or so, I’ve gotten a few things crossed of our list such as deciding on which hospital, mailing in the hospital registration forms, and scheduling a tour of the hospital’s birthing center. We also have our private childbirth class scheduled and we’re doing our reading homework in preparation for that class.

One of the next things on our list is to begin the search for a pediatrician. I would love to hear from those of you who live in Cincinnati to see if you have any recommendations for us. My doctor recommended a few, but they are a little farther from our house than we would like. We hope to find someone who is located closer to the West Side of Cincinnati if possible.

1. Do you recommend a pediatrician or a family practitioner?

2. Are group practices better?

3. Did you interview the doctor you chose before making your decision?

4. What do you love about the doctor you chose?

Even if you don’t have a recommendation for us, we definitely welcome any advice on the subject :)

Thanks!

Hi Miss Kelly

Since I am the mama of a multiply handicapped, special needs girlie girl, I can 100% recommend West Side Pediatrics. All the physicians in the practice are wonderful, but our doc came very highly recommended by the Director of the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s here in Cincy. I can’t speak more highly of the practice….they are AWESOME! Let me know if I can give you any of the drs’ names…

GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS!

Hello, I haven’t talked to you since HS probably :0) But I would recommend Springdale/Mason Pediatrics! They’re right across from Bowen’s office actually (and they have an office in Mason). They’re very good and they have lots of pediatricians to choose from. I wish you the best for you, your little one, and your family!

Sweet!! I am so happy to read Mel’s comment! We used to go to a family doctor that saw Torin when Torin was little, but he’s just too far away. Then we started seeing a homeopathic MD but I just wasn’t quite sure about him. I wish I had more of selection for homeopathic/naturopathic doctors in Cincinnati, but alas he’s the only one I know of. So after a little poking around, we made an appt. with Dr. Weisenberger! My requirements are similar to what Mel is describing (alternative vax schedule, etc.). We have not seen him yet but I will let you know what I think!!

We go to group health too. Weisenberger is really cool. Very relaxed makes you feel at ease about everything. Tells you the answer to questions you never thought to ask. Adam even said how much he likes him and he never vocalizes opinions like that! We chose him for 3 reasons: 1. I went there when I was little though my doc is dead lol. 2. A few natural friends of mine thouroughly interviewed him and if they were satisfied- he’s gotta be good! They had alOT of questions! And c. He will do an alternate vaccine schedule if u want. Queen city physicians come very highly recommended but they don’t change around vaccines.:-/ we’ve seen him twice and do again on mon! Like him a lot!

We went with a pediatrician. We like that they are really tuned into the latest on children and vaccination information and other things. We chose a doctor that was in a group as well that has evening and weekend hours. (A huge plus over an indiv. doctor.)

I will say, that we interviewed a dr. and we weren’t very impressed. But we liked the group. We figured we would just see how things went. Well, we fell in love with the Dr. that was on call from our group and came to see Miles in the hospital before we went home. We stayed with her and have been thrilled ever since. So perhaps you could just find a group you like, pick a random Dr. and see how shows up and is on call when your little one is born. If I had to choose, I would pick a doctor who is a woman and a mom herself. I really trust my doctor’s choices because it’s what she does for her kids, based off all of her years of experience and education.

Hope that helps!

no advice to give, but i remember my pediatrician had the coolest wall murals of the jungle – monkeys, trees and vines, hippos… kind of like the jungle book.

actually, maybe that’s what it was modeled after. hmm.
