Registering for Dummies

The time is upon us to start thinking about registering…and I will be the first to admit that I’m completely lost. We are first time parents and we have no idea what we really need. For some reason I feel super overwhelmed at the thought of registering for baby stuff and I remember feeling the same way when we registered for our wedding. There are just soooo many [too many] options!! How do I decide between 100 different types & brands of bottles? What kind of things can we buy the cheap version of…or should we have the attitude of “you get what you pay for” for every item?? With every baby shower I’ve been to, I am more and more amazed at the amount of stuff a tiny human requires!!

I am the type of person who likes to be prepared, but then again I have been known to be cheap. I don’t want to buy or register for anything unnecessary that will just end up taking up space and collecting dust until we finally decide to turn around and sell it on Craigslist. I am looking  for any helpful tips or advice from you veteran parents out there before we set out to do the dirty work. I don’t want to be talked into anything by registry consultants…I just want to be able to walk into the store, get the gun, and go about our merry way with confidence in knowing what we really need and what to avoid. Thanks!

I just sent this to a friend.. so I thought I would copy and paste it on your sight! :)

1st. There are many things you can find second hand or on Craigs List. I got my Medela breast pump from a woman who had used it once, off Craigslist for eighty dollars rather than spending two hundred for a new one. I have also borrowed a swing and bouncer from friends who aren’t planning on having babies anytime soon. GARAGE SALES are also golden for finding baby stuff.

2nd- I love my Chicco stroller and carseat. The car seat is not very heavy and the stroller glides great!! It also fits well in my trunk. I also think whatever carseat/stroller you end up getting will be fine. I would recommend getting a carseat that comes with a stroller… its SO nice being able to just click the carseat onto the stroller if I want to go somewhere.

3rd. I would get a Moby wrap rather than buying the Baby Bjorn carrier. Henry loves being wrapped up tight in his Moby wrap and he cries when we try to put him in the Bjorn carrier.

4th- for burp rags I would just buy the white cloth diapers and use them. They soak up so much more spit up and get really soft in the wash, plus they are so much cheaper. I love them much more than “burp cloths”

5th- I didnt think we needed one of those Diaper genies or whatever.. i just have a small pail by his changing table. I think its gross to have a huge diaper garbage can.. id much rather just take his diapers to the trash can outside every day.. just a personal opinion though…

6th- do NOT register for clothes.. sooo many people will get you clothes anyways

7th- I suggest registering for a few crib sheet savers.. it makes it so much easier to change those when he spits up rather than taking the entire sheet off the crib.

8th- Henry loves the swaddlers you can buy. He is very wiggly and those keep him wrapped tight. He manages to get out if we only swaddle him in a blanket

9th- only buy sleep sacks for when they are over 6 months. While they are little they like to be swaddled so they wont use the sleep sack.

10th- Henry loves his little aquarium thing that hangs on his crib. It makes waves and ocean noises which is like white noise while he sleeps. I would highly recommend that!! :)

11th- I would say register for as many larger items as you can. I registered for a high chair, running stroller and other big ticket items. You can always take them back if you need something else sooner. I ended up getting many of the bigger items I asked for which was nice!

Kelly,
Trixie says “you don’t really need most of that shit.”
Her advice: Something for the crib that makes you happy because the baby doesn’t care.
Extra sheets and waterproof cover. Don’t buy clothes in sizes 0-6 because you will receive more than you need and baby will grow out of them more than it will wear them. Actually I thought receiving clothes that were 9-18 months was nice because they actually got more use.
THe Avent bottles she liked fine and a good microwave sterilizer is great.
My input: Perrin enjoyed and used the fisher price crib aquarium toy forever and it helped her go to sleep well. Get a sturdy compact stroller and quit using it as soon and as much as possible – kids can learn to walk and when trained to are quite good at it. For toys, save your money and space – keep it simple and quiet! Despite fancy toys we had , the clothes hamper, laundry basket, tupperware and pots and pans were most played with. Save batteries – let the child create sound effects; they’re good at that too.
Spend your money (or ask for is better) on a very good, highly safety-rated car seat with mutiple bases so you can switch cars in a literal snap and on quality room furniture. We never had a changing table and never missed it.
So there I posted on your blog – let hell commence freezing.

mikki roo - January 12, 2010 - 2:15 pm

My boys are already 6 and 4 and I know things have changed a LOT!

But here’s a few things I would NOT get:
-Swing (my kids hated it and it took up way too much room!)
-Too many stimulating play gyms, etc.
-A cheap stroller (you will be pushing it for miles, find one that pushes easily and folds up easily & compactly)
-Change table with open shelving (tend to look cluttered and is a pain to keep dust-free. if you buy a dresser or similar piece of furniture it can be used for other purposes after your baby has been potty trained)

What I loved:
-Bumbo!
-Jolly jumper
-Jogging stroller
-Bathtub with thermometer inside
-Bouncer (this time I got that cool Dwell one from Target with the elephants)
-Avent hand pump & bottles
-Stretch knit blankets rather than cotton.
-Rompers – this is the single nicest article of clothing for an infant because they can sleep in them but they’re way more attractive than a sleeper!

Here’s one way you could start your list. Make a spreadsheet with columns for activity, basics/clothing, basics/other, quantity, style/brand/store, own purchase, shower/gift, and then extra/wish list (or some such). Consider and write down each activity the baby will be involved in, daily-weekly-monthly-infrequently. You might want a Mom column, too, for anything you might need for that activity. Now think of what would be necessary to have for each activity. For example, a bath would need (one line each item), wash cloths, towels, soap, baby shampoo, q-tips? clothing needs for after bath…these would go under the basics columns. I would suggest going through as many activities you can think of FIRST with basics (feeding, naps, staying-in/clothes, going-out/clothes, etc). Just brainstorm and write down whatever you think of, you can always edit. You’ll find in some cases, the same items are used, mark them as such somehow. THEN go back and write down (or jot down as they come to mind) extras you think of, things that might be fun but not really necessary and such. NOW go back and write down specific brands/styles/colors of what you like next to the basics as well as the extras. For quantities, just figure say how many times a week each activity will take place, how often you want to do wash, are the items needed reusable or perishable goods. For example, you may give the baby a short bath each day, using a clean wash cloth and small baby towel each time. So try to start off with 7-10 of each. These items are not that expensive so go for it. However, the shampoo and soap should last you a month probably, so figure accordingly. Many items on your list can have several uses. Those wash cloths can be used during the day to clean up the baby’s face and hands after feeding, and you’ll want at least one with you in your diaper bag when you go out. “Diaper bag” should be an activity, simply go through what you’ll be doing with the baby, you won’t need the kitchen sink! It would be a good idea to stock the bag and keep it stocked, no loading and unloading everything everytime you go out, with staples of course.

I know I wrote a short book here, lol! Things kept coming to mind as I wrote :) and I’ve probably left some things out. Well, try it or not, maybe it will help you! You are so organized anyway, I know you’ll get everything figured out! If I can help you, let me know :)
Love you much, Mom

Kelly – I received two different lists from friends that really helped us to register. I will email them both to you. Hope they help! :)

Also, thanks for such great pictures of Brett and I

Sara - January 9, 2010 - 12:49 am

P.S. I love all things Britax. Because when we had an accident(Look under December 2007 on my blog for THAT little gem), my daughter was in one and walked away with nary a bruise.
And I have to second the sleep sack–SWEAR BY THEM.

Sara - January 9, 2010 - 12:47 am

Register for a bouncey seat.
Register for several types of bottles.
Register for a bathtub(One that you’ll be able to clean EASILY)
Register for a pack n play.
Register for a bassinet.
And register for all the little gadgets that you wouldn’t necessarily buy for yourself, but think will make your life easier. You’ll find in time that they DO make your life easier, and you’ll be grateful!
Happy shooting!

i also agree about the sleepsack and the miracle blanket is a godsend (2 given to me by my bro) – leo is sleeping through the night now because of this blanket! and the waterproof pads are nice too! and i do like the gerber organic cotton burp cloths and baby washcloths. and a baby swing – leo likes switching btwn the bouncy and swing – and a playmat.

jillian - January 8, 2010 - 4:20 pm

jogging stroller – we got the bob revolution and it turns on a dime and folds up so easily – pack n play – you will want one with a good changing table where it doesn’t feel like the baby’s going to roll off – a lot of newer gracos are unstable – the bouncy seat is a must. get one that vibrates – white long sleeved newborn tops with the hand covers – 2 changing table covers – lots of cloth diapers for spit up – aveeno baby cleanser and lotion (sis-in-law recommended this to me when leo started getting baby acne – worked like a charm in clearing it up and leaves his skin SO soft) – receiving blankets – rockabye baby cds – the breastfriend pillow if you’re going to breastfeed (worked WAY better for me than the boppy that i received as a hand me down). things you may want to buy on your own rather than put on your registry – lansinoh disposable boob pads (AWESOME), mother’s love nipple cream (found at whole foods), medela nursing sleep bras. and check out my registry at babies r us – it’s still there – i love the highchair we registered for, we put it together but of course leo’s still too small and hasn’t used it yet. but it gets awesome reviews and looks sweet! ha! if i think of anything else, i’ll let you know.

Some things that we couldn’t live without = newborn sleep sacks (not having to deal with zippers or snaps in the middle of the night was priceless), several waterproof pads (good for the crib, changing table, can also keep one in the diaper bag), extra crib sheets, bundle me for the car seat, a baby carrier (I had a baby bjorn that I liked – it did hurt my back if I used it for longer periods of time, but I think every carrier will do that after a while), Dr. Brown’s BPA free bottles (just go ahead and get the 8oz ones and skip the 4oz ones), good absorbent burp cloths (skip the fancy ones and get soft ones that are absorbent – we had some plain gerber ones that I liked), digital baby monitor (digital so neighbors with cordless phones can’t hear you, we have the graco one), a sleep positioner (we used this in the bassinet, I think it made Harper feel more secure and it reassured me that she would sleep on her back), if you are going to breast feed – get a good pump and some lansinoh cream (trust me on that one), ask people to buy you sleepers/onsies for sizes other than newborn (babies grow so fast that you want to have larger sizes on hand), get your diapers and wipes at sam’s club (we get Huggies and they work great and are less expensive).

Some things that I wouldn’t recommend = you don’t need a million baby blankets (5 is probably enough, but everyone loves to give you blankets so don’t buy any until you see how many you get), some babies don’t like swings/bouncy chairs – I would try out a friend’s before you buy one.

Ok, I may think of some other things later. I’ll let you know if I do. I LOVE talking about baby stuff if you couldn’t already tell:)

Here’s one to avoid: The chicco highchair. We hated ours so much we put it on the curb and gave it away for free. The less bells and whistles on a highchair the better. It will be covered in smashed peas, so you want to be able to clean it. I wish we had gotten a wooden one.

We LOVE our jogging stroller. We didn’t scrimp on that one. You want a nice durable one. Joggingstroller.com

Splurge on the nice baby sheets and changing table covers. They cheap ones turn to crap in one washing.

A bouncer is a necessity. Any one of them will do.

Don’t buy a ton of bottles. You may have to try a few to get them right in the beginning.

Register for jammies with zippers for the newborn (or any stage.) They have them at Target. The snaps will make you lose your mind in the middle of the night!

Have fun! Register in small spurts!

A baby bathtub isn’t really needed. Just buy one of those big sponges for your sink. I wish I had never bought one.

Infant shoes are silly and fall off all the time.

I feel your pain! I remember how stressed I was when I registered for our daughter.
I found consumerreports.org to be the most useful reference for what products are good. They rate the safety of everything, and often the cheaper things are better. They also have a really great list of what you’ll need for a new baby and that’s what I based my registry on.
Plus their guide on buying for baby.
These are the things I think are worth spending more on:
Clothing wise – since this is your first child I probably wouldn’t register for any since you’ll probably get them as gifts. But if you have to register or buy some go for Carters and nothing else. It’s more expensive than gerber and circo, but honestly the best brand, they are truest to size and don’t shrink.
Diaper Genie – is pretty useful but some people (aka my husband!) find it really hard to use. You could probably skip it.
Baby swing – I found this super helpful as it’s a place baby can hang out safely and if they have trouble sleeping can aid them to sleep a bit, mine is a fisher price.
Bouncer seat – total necessity in my opinion. Baby can nap there and sit strapped in while you eat or shower or whatever, if you get a nice one (I got the Boppy Cradle in Comfort) then it will last ages, my daughter is 18mths old and uses hers as a toddler seat for watching tv
Pack & Play – totally necessary, get a really good one as it’s a safety issue. The ones that have an attachment at the top for baby to sleep higher up when they’re little is super useful. Our daughter slept in it a lot when she was newborn, and now that i’m pregnant again I use it as a portable change table downstairs.
Baby sling/carrier – also super necessary. Most people go for the baby bjorn, but we got a Jeep brand and it’s been really great I have to admit.
I think I ended up writing way may than I intended…OOPS! but if I was you I’d use consumer reports, it’s an amazing resource!

Kat - January 8, 2010 - 3:15 pm

My biggest advice is remember that everything out there (like strollers, car seats, cribs, etc) have all met safety requirements. So it does not mean that you love your baby more if you buy the $500 car seat! I would not register for clothes. YOu will get a ton and by the time the baby comes clothes that you would have registered for will most likely be gone. We did however register for packs of white onesies for NB, 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 12. That has been very helpful!
