A year ago today…

We found out we were having a boy!

And my oh my look where we are now…the light of our lives is now 7-1/2 months old!!

As I was reminiscing on this day last year, I got all choked up. The joy & excitement that we felt that day has escalated ten fold since our little man was born and I am just overwhelmed at how blessed we are. I know it sounds so cliche, but our lives are so much richer now and I can’t even imagine not being able to wake up to his smiling face everyday.

It is funny that two of the characteristics I noted about our ultrasound still remain true today [the fact that he had his mouth open & that he was very active]. Corbin has always been a “mouth breather” and the amount of drool this kid produces is unbelievable! He started drooling around 2 months and we thought for sure he would start teething early – but nope – still no teeth. Just in the last coupe of weeks, he has stopped drooling so much, though – thank goodness! And from the moment I felt his first kick, Corbin was very active in the womb and that hasn’t changed one bit! He started crawling right around 6 months and now he is pulling himself up on anything he can get his little hands on. His newest trick is climbing on the coffee table and climbing the baby gate! Every time we turn around, he has something he shouldn’t: computer cords, tv remote, the dog bowl, etc. It is a full time job just to keep up with him these days:) Who know a 7 month old could move so fast?!? We just finished putting up our Christmas tree and I’m sure it will be his newest obsession and temptation.

I have really missed this blog, and I will be back to blogging regularly over here VERY soon. I have been too busy with photo shoots and editing (on top of my other job and everyday life) to even think much these days, but I am finally to the point where I can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel. Only 2 more shoots and a few sessions left to edit and I’m done until January – yay!! We have been WAY TOO BUSY these last few months and I hope to make some changes to avoid that next year. More on that later:)

I have a lot of catching up to do…and lots more pictures coming soon! Happy December:)

iPhone Photos

Here is a look back at our Summer via my iPhone photos…

Corbin and I did a lot of walking while I was on maternity leave and poor Opie just couldn’t keep up:)

This was waiting for me back at the office:)My dad is so sweet!Corbin decided to sleep through lunch. We were in Gatlinburg at the time and didn’t have his carseat with us while we were walking around, so we thought the next best thing was to lay him on the table. It was very amusing to the passersby to say the least!

Snuggling with daddy:)I have a wall of record albums in my house and since Bon Jovi is my ultimate fav I have been searching for one of his records at thrift stores & flea markets for years with NO luck. What do you know Donny found some and surprised me with these for my birthday. Needless to say I was thrilled! My cousins from San Antonio came up to meet Corbin and Perrin was having a blast taking pictures with my nice camera. One of Corbin’s all time FAVORITE things is bath time. I’m pretty sure he would sit in there for hours if we let him. And p.s. – no need for a baby bathtub when you have a bumbo…works like a charm!Corbin went to his first Red’s game and saw a winner.

Gotta support our alma mater! Thanks for the onesie Jenny:)Not even worth trying to look good in a picture next to Jenny.Opie needs lots of extra attention now that Corbin is around. Poor guy isn’t the baby anymore. My yoga class did “mommy & baby” yoga the other week…it was precious:)See any resemblence here? haha! Brett just found out he’s going to be a daddy so he’s practicing:)Look mom I can sit up by myself! And the most recent milestone…sitting all by himself in the shopping cart. He absolutely loved it…I’m pretty sure he was feeling all manly and grown up now that he won’t have to sit in his pumpkin seat when I shop anymore. Good thing, too, because those things are heavy once your baby is not an infant anymore!!

5 months old

My little man is 5 months old today…so unbelievable! He is so sweet and has so much personality already. I have much more to write…and his 4 month letter to post…but I just haven’t been able to find the time! When wedding season dies down, I am definitely looking forward to paying more attention to this blog:)

p.s. – thanks to everyone who shared their input / advice on my last post about a schedule. We have decided to just continue with our “go with the flow” lifestyle because he has put himself on somewhat of a predictable schedule and it is working for us for now. We’ll see what the future holds!

How Important is a schedule for your baby?

What are your thoughts on having a [strict] schedule for your baby? Is it necessary? How did you establish a schedule if you have one?

The fact that Corbin is not on a schedule has been on my mind lately and I have mixed emotions about whether or not to try to establish a stricter routine. To be honest, the thought somewhat overwhelms me because our life is not very routine. I went back to work part-time about a month ago and I work Wednesday – Friday 9a-5p. From about April-October, I have photo shoots almost every weekend – and when we shoot a wedding, that is an all-day event and we do not get home until late at night. I also have photo shoots and/or client meetings almost every Monday (which is supposed to be an off-day to stay home with Corbin and get editing done), but it just hasn’t worked out that way lately. We have our Bible study every Monday night and I have yoga every Tuesday evening for an hour. Wow when I type it all out – I sound like a crazy woman who never gets to see her baby – but that is definitely not the case! I spend all my free time with him, which is why I am way behind on editing, blogging and all other tasks related to my photo biz.

I started out nursing on demand and continue to do so, so he does not have regulated feeding times. He has naturally adapted to eating about every 3-4 hours after he wakes up in the morning, which is pretty normal for his age. We do not have a set bedtime, wake up time, or nap times, either. He started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks all on his own and has continued to do so ever since. He goes down for naps & for the night when he lets me know he is tired. I lay him down awake at the first signs of being tired (he gets a little fussy or just starts rubbing his eyes) and he is usually relieved to be down, finds his thumb, and is out in no time. Sometimes he is down for the night at 8:30pm, sometimes it is 11pm…it all depends on what we are doing that evening and/or when his last nap was.

So far not having a schedule is working out fine and he is a very adaptable baby. I like not having to plan errands or outings around a nap schedule, however on the days when I am not at work and need to be working from home on my photography, I am finding that I am not getting as much done and I wonder if it is partially due to the fact that we are not on a schedule. Some days he will take really good naps, other days he will just cat nap off and on all day and that makes it really hard to get anything done. I find myself being the most productive after he is asleep for the night and that means I am working until the wee hours of the morning and don’t get to go to bed with my husband:(

Suggestions? Advice?

Letters to Corbin: 3 months

Dear Corbin,

I never knew how much I could love until you arrived, nor how fulfilled my life would be as I take on the new role of mother. You have made our lives better in every way and my heart melts to pieces every time you flash me one of your million watt smiles. I love you so much it hurts sometimes…

One thing that has surprised me a little is how easy and natural the adjustment to motherhood has been for me. From the time you were born, you have been a relatively easy, laid back baby and I’m sure that has helped more than I know. But even during the difficult times, I have never felt too crazy or super stressed and I am very thankful for that and can only pray that my patience level grows with you:)

I will say that you have already mastered two of the most important things in life: eating and sleeping. The doctor is thrilled that you have grown about 4 inches and gained almost 6 pounds since you were born and I am thrilled that you have been sleeping through the night since you were 8 weeks old! Although in some ways I miss the first couple weeks of your life when I pretty much lived on the couch and the only place you slept was on my chest, you slept in your big boy crib for the first time when you were 6 weeks old and have been there ever since. It is the cutest thing in the world to watch you sleep…especially when you have your little thumb in your mouth:)

And yes, you have been a belly sleeper since day 1 even though “they” say that is a no-no these days. You HATE to be on your back except to get your diaper changed, which makes the car seat your worst enemy. The fact that you hate your car seat makes things a little difficult at times, so we just cruise with the windows down and the music cranked up most of the time. You are content to shop in the baby bjorn and sit on our laps in restaurants, so we make do just fine. We are taking you on your first road trip to Gatlinburg at the end of the month, though, and I am hoping we will survive the 6 hour ride without pulling all of our hair out:)

Since I have been off work, we have made it a habit to go for a walk almost every day. You don’t take in the views much because you fall asleep almost as soon as you get in your stroller, but at least you are very entertaining to the passersby who always giggle and comment about your little booty in the air.

I have to say you get it honest, though.

Watching your development has been absolutely amazing! You are 3 days shy of being 3 months old and you have changed so much. You don’t look quite as much like your Pappy as you did when you were first born and are starting to look a little more like my baby pictures.

One thing we know for sure is that you already have gorgeous blue eyes and disgustingly long eyelashes that are going to drive the girls crazy!

Case in point:

You are already very strong and active. Every morning when I get you up, I find you on the other side of your crib with your covers kicked off. Now you have even figured out how to flip yourself over onto your back, but you are not always amused by this since you can’t get yourself back onto your belly yet.

Although you tolerate your swing, it is definitely not your favorite because it confines you kind of like your car seat does – you would much rather be bouncing around in your jumper or chillin’ on the couch like a big boy.

At least you still enjoy one kind of confinement – being held. You are super cuddly and I’m pretty sure you would be happy if you were held all day long. I’m not complaining, though! I only hope you don’t outgrow your cuddly nature.

You are quite the star of the show wherever you go – especially on your daddy’s side of the family since you are the first great grandchild and first baby on that side of the family in 25 years.

Probably your biggest adventure (aside from being born) so far has been going swimming. You have grown to like the bath and really enjoy it when we spray you with the hand held sprayer in the shower, so we figured you would like the pool and we were right. I even dunked you underwater and you didn’t mind one bit!

I have to admit that sometimes we laugh at you when you cry because you make the cutest, funniest faces! Here is one of your classics…

…we much prefer when you look like this, though:)

Happy 3 months little man!

Love,

your mama
